Multilingual Education
"Speaking two (or more) languages rather than just one has obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age." ("Why Bilinguals are Smarter", 2012)
Speaking two or more languages is such a gift! There is overwhelming research and evidence indicating the advantages of speaking more than one language. My job here at WCA is to support your child in their quest to proficiency in the english language, while still promoting the use of their first language or other language of influence used in the home.
504 Education
Section 504 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon a documented disability. Section 504 is an anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met. A 504 Accommodation Plan may be developed for a child who is not enrolled in special education but who requires accommodations or modifications during the school day. A 504 Accommodation Plan should be used in the school to support the needs of a child who does not have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). For example, this might include a child with diabetes, cystic fibrosis, nutrition needs, metabolic disorder, or any documented disability that does not reach the level of severity for special education services required under the Individuals with disabilities Act. In the case of a child classified under Public Law 504, only accommodations and/or modifications are provided by the school.
